Ever Learning to Know Him
Scripture: Ps. 25:4 “Show me Your ways. O Lord; Teach me Your paths.”
Teachableness is a quality found in those who desire to learn. It was present in the disciples of Jesus Christ and seen in Christ’s relationship to His Father. In Heb. 5:8, Christ, God’s divine Son had to learn His obedience not from His Sonship, but from His sufferings.
As the Son, He was always obedient to the Father’s will; but the special obedience in which He needed to learn was to qualify Him as our High Priest. Yes, He had to learn experimentally in practical suffering. Phil. 2:6–8 says that He was “equal with God, but took upon Him the form of a servant, and became obedient unto death.” He was obedient already before His passion, but He stooped to a still more humiliating and trying form of obedience. His learning and obeying brought forth His death, resurrection and glorious ascension.
Unwillingness to be teachable to receive God’s truth leads to spiritual darkness -- no peace, a stubborn heart, seeing and not perceiving, hearing and not understanding. When we are teachable, we will grow, be able to discern God’s guidance, and have a life of obedience that will lead to fruitfulness for God’s glory.
Prayer: Father, I am still so ignorant as to the depth of Your heart and character. I guess that is why I will forever be learning in eternity. With my short time on earth, please Holy Spirit teach me Your purposes and plans for my life, and prepare my heart to endure whatever the cost it will take to know You.
