Caregiver, Doulos, Friend

SCRIPTURE: "Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus...2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ...27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ:... that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;" Philippians 1: 1, 2, 27 (KJV)
With our Bibles open, even with this glimpse of a portion of the letter to the Philippians, we understand ourselves as being 'of' Jesus Christ and 'in' Christ, receiving 'from' God as His dear children. Through this relational dynamic, we understand and are expected to 'let' a certain manner of living, our 'conversation', be expressed in what we've been given. This manner of living aligns with what the gospel is and is doing within the hearer who has come to believe.

We become 'caregivers' upon the great care we received [and are receiving] from God, with His Spirit, aspiring to walk as Jesus did, in holiness and with compassion toward all. "...casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you." 1 Peter 5:7

We become 'servants' [i.e. a slave, doulos] unto God, offering a living sacrifice of praise, and accepting our transformation with all wisdom and with worship. We rejoice both constrained and elevated by the lighter chains of grace, as wholly and preferentially His. "...ye have been called unto liberty; only not use liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another." Galatians 5:13

And throughout this pilgrimage, we discover how to be a 'friend' by faith. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

Our living then is informed by the example of Jesus and His disciples put upon our understanding, and by the active internal lead of the Holy Spirit. Our discovery is further defined and refined through community. We see great, even greatest, care on the cross ... we see service on the cross ... we see our best Friend on the cross ...and beyond the cross, we find home with God. Thank You, Jesus!

PRAYER: Heavenly and eternal Father, help us with our steps to be as Paul and Timotheus, kindred spirits in Christ, reaching and striving on one accord, with the name of Jesus as the banner of our hearts, and with one unifying breath praising Him, with one obedient 'muscularity', worshipping Him. Hallelujah! Amen.
