The Imperative to Obey and Work

SCRIPTURE: “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” Joshua 1:8
When we hear the word “disobedience” we can become indifferent to it because it is an attitude often ascribed to children. When the term is applied to adults the idea still seems childish until you see the definition of the word. Disobedience-an unwillingness or no desire to obey. Now that definition stings more than the word because its meaning has resonated within me, which prompts a self-examination and I have to admit what God already knows, I have been disobedient. Ask yourself, “In what have I been disobedient?”

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth (but it has), but you shall meditate in it day and night (I have not done that), that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it (I don’t do all that is written in it). For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success (I want the results, but I don’t want all that work).

The imperative from this scripture is to sacrifice all of you and to speak and study the Word of God, to be obedient to all that is in the Word, and when we yield to it will produce positive results. The command for you and me is to obey and work (the words in bold denote action)! My fellow lazy Christians let’s purpose to be obedient and work. Let us purpose to hide God’s Word in our hearts that we might not sin against Him (Psalm 119:11) and be fruitful in every good work (Colossians 1:10).

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we have missed the mark in studying the Word of God. It has departed from our minds and mouths because we have been disobedient in studying to show ourselves approved workers who need not be ashamed. Please forgive us for our laziness and procrastination in studying Your Word, not rightly dividing the Word of truth, and taking for granted Your grace and mercy.  Thank You for Your precious promise found in Joshua 1:8. Now Lord, may we be about this work of meditating in Your Word day and night! In Jesus’ name I pray, amen!
