Heart Ownership
Scripture: Matthew 6:20-21 (NASB) - But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
The Oxford American Dictionary defines treasure as “something of value-especially a long-kept possession.” What do you include on your list of most valued treasures? Costly jewelry, pricey technological gadgets? Or perhaps you’d include items purchased for the comfort of your inner sanctum? While there’s nothing inherently wicked about our choice of purchases, we must remember that both our treasure and where our heart lies cannot occupy the same “parking spot” on our values lot! We cannot have the same allegiance to both! What is number one in our heart must be our faithfulness to God—the One who redeemed us for Himself! A choice must be made before we’re laid in our grave!
Someone phrased it well when they said that either we will own our possessions, or they will own us! We must remind ourselves of the truth in this serious matter because what we decide will determine the course of how we’ll invest the balance of our lives.
What we deem most important will chart our life’s course. If we profess Jesus as our Lord, then our efforts to please Him must surpass our pursuit of earthbound treasures. The latter will most certainly pass away. (1 Jn. 2:16, 17) Our devotion of time, treasure, and talents, if wedded to Jesus Christ, will never pass away! Is it time, dear one, for a spiritual EKG?
Prayer: Thank You, Father, for sending Jesus to accomplish our salvation. Forgive us when we fail to highly esteem our relationship with You as our most expensive and eternal Treasure! Bless You, O God! Amen!
