Our Heavenly Signature
Scripture: Micah 6:8 - As He hath shewed thee what is good, DO JUSTLY, LOVE MERCY, WALK HUMBLY BEFORE THE LORD, YOUR GOD."
Courtesy of my neighbors, I've had the pleasure lately of awakening to the crowing of two roosters [in the backyard next door to us], and listening closely, these two, each, have a distinctive, signature crowing that never-ever changes, the same four-part signature, note for note, every morning [nearing 5AM]. Debora and I practiced mimicking their crowing [we really need to get out more], and came pretty close to sounding like theirs, although I believe mine was a bit more on point. Debora shared with me how she took her new skill set to the fence near where the chickens and these roosters were, prompting them to pause with quiet bewilderment, briefly, then to go about their pecking. I suspect they were thinking, 'Man, we do not sound like that! She needs to stick to her own noise, and leave our thang alone!' [personal speculation]
We all have a signature of sorts which serves to identify us, more basic than things like a driver's license, a voter's i.d., or a passport. Examples might include our written signature, or a certain characteristic walk, or our vocal pattern, or our fingerprint, or [as is done in some airports now] a scanned depiction of our retina.
My sweetie enjoys 'Paternity Court' occasionally, which will always offer up, dramatically, a report on the DNA test of the child, and often the two curious folks that might be their parents. [okay, I might steal a peek at the show too]. DNA is a unique biomolecular-genetic marker of each of us, another signature.
Is there such a thing as a Christian 'signature' in the world? or personally, a 'signature' denoting the individual as one of Christ's?
Psalm 23 refers to our signature, as "Goodness and Mercy", being left where we've been, or as stated [v.6]"Goodness and Mercy shall follow me all the days of my life..." Our legacy in history is goodness and mercy, as we 'sheep' follow the LORD as "shepherd" [v1-3] Ephesians 2:10 offers "For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained, that we should walk in them.", inviting us to remember that in life we are do good things, as He has begun a good thing in us [no retirement verses here]. Galatians 5:22-23 details our 'signature' as evidenced by "the fruit of the Spirit...love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance..."
In the book of Acts, collectively, we show 'unity' as a Christian signature within the public square... and certainly as God so LOVED the world, a major signature of ours, even overwhelming faith and hope, is the characteristic of LOVE [identified also as charity, and by some translations, compassion] 1st Corinthians 13.
So when the prophet Micah encourages our humble walk before the Lord, he is encouraging a surrendered attitude and lifestyle, which is permissive [and prescriptive] of our being just in our doings, and ever inclined toward mercy, day by day, and oppositional to our old nature and our flesh.
Do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly before the Lord, our God!
God has shown us what is good...and it is written upon our hearts.
Prayer: Thank You Lord for Your countless mercies, and incalculable graces. May the blessing which is mine, bless You back. Give me a greater confidence, when I lack it, to touch others for You. Thank You Jesus for Your redeeming touch. Amen!
