Adonai – Master

Scripture:  Psalms 16:1-2 – Keep me safe, O God, for I have come to You for refuge. I said to the Lord, “You are my Master! Every good thing I have comes from You.”

The name Adonai is in the Bible over 400 times!  The name comes from the word Adon, which means “Master” or “ruler”.  It relates to “dominion”, “rulership”, and ”possessor”.  God is not only Elohim (creator), but He is also referred to as “owner”.  “For You, O Lord, are supreme over all the earth:  You are exalted far above all gods (Psalms 97:9).  “For every beast of the forest is Mine, the cattle on a thousand hills” (Psalms 50:10).  Since God is the absolute owner/ruler, our response to Him should be of submission, surrender, trust, humility and obedience.  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths”(Proverbs 3:5-6).   As Christians, we have to live our lives allowing Him to direct our path – calling the shots.  He should get the final say in our decisions in our daily lives – concerning the use of our talents, gifts, time, and treasures.  As we surrender to the Lord, we will experience Him unfolding His plan for our lives.

As we allow the Lord to be our Master – seeking/setting your mind on things above,  and as we abide in Christ, His plans for us will unfold and blossom before us – and we will be fruitful.  “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing (John 15:4-5).  “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:1-2).

Master, the tempest is raging
The billows are tossing high
The sky is o'ershadowed with blackness
No shelter or help is nigh
Carest thou not that we perish?
How canst thou lie asleep
When each moment so madly is threatening
A grave in the angry deep?

(Chorus)
The winds and the waves shall obey thy will
Peace, be still
Peace, be still
Peace, be still
Peace, be still
Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea
Or demons, or men, or whatever it be
No water can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean and earth and sky
They all shall sweetly obey thy will
Peace, peace, be still

Prayer:  Thank You Lord for being my Savior, Lord, and Master.  Help me to consistently surrender my ways to You.  I am your servant – under rower.  I want You to always direct my path.  (Proverbs 3:5-6 )  In Jesus’ name, I pray.  Amen.
