It is Well with My Soul
Scripture: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 - To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: 2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted; 3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 A time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; 7 A time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
"It Is Well with My Soul" is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. After suffering the loss of his children, Spafford wrote this beautiful hymn as a testament to the salvation he found in Jesus through the good and bad times in life.
It is well with my soul concerning losses in my life, but it is also well with my soul concerning dealing with consequences of me making wrong choices in my life. I have had mountain top experiences and have had valley low experiences too. There have been things that I have done that are right, but there have been wrong choices that I have made as a Christian. I am accountable for wrong choices that I have made, but the Lord has forgiven me. I have to deal with the consequences of my choices. Dealing with those consequences, it is still well with my soul. God is in control, and He strengthens me as I am trusting Him and learning from past sins/wrong choices that I have made as a Christian.
Regardless of our season in life (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8), God teaches us to find internal and eternal peace in Jesus. It is well with my soul!
John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
John 16:29-33 - His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.”31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
Romans 5:1- Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:14-15 - For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace.
Colossians 3:15 - And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
The lyrics to “It is Well with My Soul” by Tori Kelly really ministers to my heart:
Teach me how to love You
Show me how to trust You
More than with my words or with a song
No, it's not been easy
To live life down on my knees
But with faith I know I'll carry on
There is more to see than with my eyes
But fear sometimes can leave me paralyzed
I realize that I'm not in control
Yet it is well with my soul
The enemy's against me
Arrows all around me
Never knew the fight would last so long
In seasons of depression
I plead for Your protection
Make me right, I'm tired of being wrong
Every time there's hope, it seems to die
And the voices all around me feed that lie
Everything I see tells me to let go
Yet it is well with my soul
It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: There are so many things good and bad going on around me. Sometimes it can be overwhelming, but You give me peace. No matter what happens in the future, it is well with my soul. It is well with my soul because You are with me. I know that You will carry me through. I love You Jesus! All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
