Change is Inevitable

SCRIPTURE: “But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-8
Change is something that scares all of us. Whether you’re young or old, as children of God, we all constantly face change, good and evil, and it should build godly character. The older we get, the more we realize the different ways we avoid change, whether that's by creating or enforcing certain laws, not allowing new ideas to flourish, or letting new systems take hold when the old system seems to be doing just fine. When you’re young, change is just as scary. Graduating from one grade and going on to the next, changing schools, making new friends, being in a new city or state with people you don't know, or even food that's unfamiliar. Change is terrifying and uncomfortable, yet it produces godly character.

Imagine the changes Abram faced when he was divinely told to get out of Ur; convincing his wife and nephew to also leave with him; giving Lot the best land while he willingly took the lesser; taking his son, Isaac, to be an offering. Picture Moses’ change when he learned he was actually a Hebrew; when he killed the Egyptian; or when he fled for his life only to accept the job offer of helping deliver his people from bondage. Then there is Paul with the supernatural encounter with Jesus and his change on the road to Damascus - the supernatural change to now accept the One he once vehemently rejected. In all three of these Bible giants, we see godly character and how it was developed.

Our omniscient Savior, Jesus, who is the same, yesterday, today and forevermore (Hebrews 13:8), also faced constant change during his 33 years, but was always about His Father’s business. The godly character developed in our Savior is what we chase after today, but is in jeopardy of being lost due to attitudes such as stubbornness, pride, fear, or some kind of false perception of our own holiness. As we too are about our Father’s business, may we strive to keep ourselves open to change, (not the change that is contrary to the Word of God, but the change that is important to all children of God.) May we be striving toward it, head on, and embracing this godly change.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, please give us the discernment to see where we should grow, what we should keep, what we should let go of, and where we should allow new experiences into our lives, new challenges, new blessings, new opportunities to testify of Your name to grow us as Your sons and daughters. It is in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Thank you Sis. Chloe. Yes Lord, change is rough and our God knows exactly what we need and nothing takes Him by surprise.

Let it be well with our souls, for indeed, a wonderful change has come over us, in Christ Jesus. Blessings, Sister Chloe, and an Amen as well!

Dear Sis Chloe,

nThank you so much for your message. This reminds of a training I had when I was working, "Paradigm Shifts"!

nChoosing what to keep and letting go of some old but embracing new ways of thinking and how crucial it is for spiritual growth & understanding in our daily walk in the Lord ????

Yes Chloe, change is inevitable and misery is optional so we thank the Lord for His plans and ways that are perfect.

Sister Chloe, although God does not change, He evidently expects us to change. We are to be in the process of growing in grace and knowledge. I am reminded by your examples of Abraham and Moses that even though I am in my latter years, I must be ready to go if He calls me to go. He can surprise us at any age even as I can imagine that Abraham and Moses were probably surprised. I have been focusing on Isaiah 43:18&19 this year so I am open to Him doing something new. Change is inevitable. Thank you for your encouraging devotional.

Great article, Sis. Chloe. We can view life’s many inevitable changes as good, as we learn to view ithem through the lens of Romans 8:28.
