New Year, Same God

SCRIPTURE: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” James 1:17
At the beginning of every year people around the globe make commitments to being better in different areas of their lives. Some say boldly, “New Year, New Me.” Some people create vision boards; others write in journals or announce their goals on social media. Then there are those who don’t make any declarations but instead self-evaluate regularly and work toward personal goals privately. As we age, we should change for the better. No one should be the same person at 30 that they were at 20 unless they are God. God is perfect; He is not a man. As a result, He does not need to change or improve. You cannot improve on perfection. This level of perfection means no matter what you can depend on the Lord. There is no wavering in the Lord. There is no change depending on how He is feeling today. The Lord is stable; you can trust Him; He is an everlasting rock (Isaiah 26:4). The Lord is dependable; The Lord is faithful even when we are not (2 Timothy 2:13).

As the centuries changed, the Lord’s love for us did not. The Lord loved us so much that He gave His Son to save an underserving world. The Lord gave the world a perfect gift in Jesus Christ and even His gift didn’t change. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). His sacrifice doesn’t change because you do. Your salvation is not at risk because you sin. The work Christ did on the cross is not re-evaluated when the new year comes in, it is everlasting, never changes. The promises of the Lord will never change. When situations arise in life believers can be assured that God will never leave them or forsake them even when they feel alone. Believers can be sure that no matter what God allows that His thoughts toward them are thoughts of peace and not of evil. Believers can rest in the understanding that everything the Lord allows in their lives will work for good. The reason believes can be assured of these things is because the Lord does not change, His faithfulness is not dependent on our behavior, His character doesn’t change. The Lord is who He has always been and we can’t make Him be anything else.

PRAYER:
Dear heavenly Father, thank You for never changing. Thank You for being a God that can be trusted because You are faithful, dependable, steadfast, patience, loving, and merciful. Lord, Your word says that You are not a man that You should lie and because of this we can rest on Your Word. We can believe when You say, You will never leave us or forsake us. We can believe when You say that we can cast our cares on You because You care for us. We can be fully persuaded that nothing can separate us from Your love. Thank You for these assurances and so many more that are proven by Your character, Your very nature. Thank You for loving us so much that You gave Your only begotten Son to save the world. In Jesus name, Amen.
