PROPHECIES OF JESUS’ BIRTH: The Messiah Would Also Come from Egypt

The Birth of Jesus Christ occurs in the New Testament, but its prophetic origins can be found in several passages of the Old Testament. Through the month of December our Devotional Team will take a look at Old Testament Prophecy and the New Testament Fulfillment of the birth and life of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Be encouraged as we celebrate our Savior this Christmas Season!
SCRIPTURES:
OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY: Hosea 11:1
“When Israel was a child, I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT: Matthew 2:14, 15; Matthew 2:19-21
When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

Matthew 2:19-21
Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child’s life are dead.” 21 Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.
History records in The Old Testament scripture, the days of Hosea’s ministry to the northern
kingdom of Israel. A nation looked upon as growing and prospering; yet they are morally
corrupt. Hosea’s marriage to Gomer demonstrates a tragic and unfaithfulness of God’s people.
Hosea’s name means “salvation,” and that salvation is possible, only, if the nation will repent of
their sins, and return back to God. For, God hates the sin of His people and His judgement upon
them is certain. However, God’s loyal love stands firm for His special people. He loves them
despite their unfaithfulness. (Hosea 11:1) expresses God’s tender and faithful love for Israel at
the same time while they rebelled against Him and worshipped idols.

God loves us and He has prepared a way for us to be reconciled to Him through His Son. This
special relationship is based on His grace and covenant. (Matthew 2:14, 15), connects Hosea’s
prophecy to events relating to Jesus the true Son of God who was yet to come. The future Son
who would come out of Egypt to save His people from their sins. The gospel of Matthew
stresses, God’s providential care of His Son as Joseph His earthy Father obeyed the orders of
the angel of the Lord. The Lord protected the Messiah from hostile people during every
movement in Palestine.

Therefore, one can say without a doubt, that Hosea’s prophecy on Christ’s birth was fulfilled
in the New Testament, demonstrating that Jesus was the promised Messiah, the Son of God,
God in the flesh, who came to dwell among His people, who came out of Egypt to save His
people from their sins, and it was a fulfillment of what God has spoken by His prophet.

Prayer: Lord, You offer us such amazing knowledge and clear understanding into Your Word,
spoken one time for all times. You even illuminate our hearts and minds to what You have
spoken about our future with hope, joy, love, and peace. Thank You. In Jesus’ name. Amen
