Whatever Happened to CONTENTMENT?

SCRIPTURE: "And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” Luke 12:15
Several years ago a report was given of a man named—let’s call him “Jake.” He prided himself on being exceptionally practical. In the trunk of his late-model BMW he carried a hefty toolbox, a first-aid kit, an extra cell phone (with portable charger, of course), and a sharp Bowie knife—just in case. He was so heavily insured, said the report, that his insurance policy was insured! His safe -deposit box contained more solid-gold bars than a character in a heist movie! Jake had enough pension-fund money and IRAs to fund a lavish lifestyle, even if he lived to be 120 years old, read one account!

In Jake’s mind, God’s Word (the Bible) was no more than “irrelevant ancient literature,” as he’d never read any portion of it and avoided attendance at a Bible -teaching church like the latest plague! Never did he seriously consider that he, like every other soul on the planet, has an unknowable “expiration date.” Well, when he reached age 49, we’re told that his luxury vehicle was “t-boned” one night by a drunk driver, killing Jake instantly! This man, who was quoted as telling others, “We die like a dog, then it’s over…” soon discovered otherwise. [See Luke 16:19-31].

Jake was rich in preparation for all things temporal—like the rich man in yet another account of one who valued material wealth above eternal treasure. See Luke 12:16-21. Let’s not kid ourselves. Ask the Lord of Glory, if need be, to rid our hearts of worshipping at the altar of temporal rather than eternal riches.

PRAYER: Father, grant us hearts of true contentment and lives that demonstrate that You truly are enough, sufficient for all of our needs. Thank You, in Jesus’ name; amen!
