Love Has Everything to Do With It

SCRIPTURE: “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. ”  1 Corinthians 13: 1-3
What’s love got to do with it? The answer is simple: everything. Love has everything to do with it. God is love and anyone who does not love does not know God (1 John 4:8). In 1984, Tina Turner had a hit song entitled, What’s Love Got to do with it. It was followed 9 years later by a movie about her life. The song and movie suggest that love is mainly physical and that it doesn’t mean much because it is a “secondhand emotion” ruled by feelings. “Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken" suggests that love is ruled by how we feel so love has nothing to do with living life. However, love has everything to do with it.

The problem is we do treat love as a secondhand emotion and not the principle in living life. We forget that feelings aren’t facts and instead believe that the way we feel rules. Imagine if we loved like God said we should love. Love’s character is clearly defined in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, telling us what love is and what it is not. 1 CorinthiaNs 16:14, 1 John 4:12 and John 15:13 show us love in action. Yes, love is an action word. Why do we love? We love because God first loved us (1 John 4:19).

As believers we can’t say God is in us if we do not love others (1John 4:20). God loved us so much He sent His only Son to save us from sin (John 3:16). Jesus loved us so much that He laid His life down for us (John 15:13). As heirs to the throne we should love like the Lord loves, like Christ loves. We should not pretend to love others, but really love them. We should hate what is wrong. We should hold tightly to what is good. We should love each other with genuine affection and take delight in honoring each other. We should work hard, not be lazy. We should rejoice in hope, be patient in trouble and keep praying. We should help God’s people when in need and we should be eager to practice hospitality (Roman 12: 9-13). Sounds easy until we are in a position where we must love someone who has mistreated us, when we must love someone we dislike. In reality, God loved us even when we didn’t love ourselves, even when we were unlovable, ugly, and cloaked in sin and even when we backslide.

PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us so much that You sent Your only Son to save us from sin.  Thank You for Your love that is an example of how we should love. Forgive us when we fall short and fail to love. Although we have everything that we need to love like You love sometimes we follow the flesh instead of the Spirit. Lord, forgive us. Thank You, for the Holy Spirit and Your Word that guides us and provides us with all we need. We appreciate Your grace and mercy and desire as we grow to look and love more like You. In Jesus name, Amen.
