When the Unexpected Happens

SCRIPTURE:  "A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, 'Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.' 2 So Elisha said to her, 'What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?' And she said, 'Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.' 3 Then he said, 'Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. 4 And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.' 5 So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. 6 Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, 'Bring me another vessel.' And he said to her, 'There is not another vessel.' So the oil ceased. 7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, 'Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.'" 2 Kings 4:1-7

Faith is idle when circumstances are right, only when they are adverse is one’s faith in God exercised. Faith, like a muscle, grows strong and supple with exercise. It is not believing that God can, but believing that God will!

The widow in II Kings 4:1-2, referred to as a “certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets,” would not be able to comprehend the unfolding of God’s providence in her life. Her new walk of faith would require human responsibility which would stretch her understanding of the power and awesomeness of God. There arose a crisis for this woman – the death of her husband.

Death is a new place of testing that will provide an opportunity to experience the awesomeness of God’s character and His love. Whether it is a literal death, death of a marriage, death of a friendship, or death of a dream, it is a separation of what was familiar from the unfamiliar. You may have support and encouragement from others, but the intimacy of the Lord is immeasurable.

Our Great God is always reliable, but never predictable!! Death is that challenge in life that you can never predict or be prepared for. It is the darkness of the unknown and heart pain that will test the genuineness of your faith. Will you choose to still trust Him?

Prayer: Jesus, my Comforter and my peace, may You strengthen me in this new place of heart pain. You said that You would never leave me or forsake me and I choose to rest in the comfort of Your Word.
