The Lord is Great & Mighty

SCRIPTURE: “O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds?”  Deuteronomy 3:24
Moses’ statement in our verse above was made toward the end of His life. He was 120 years old when he died (Deuteronomy 34:7). Considering Moses made this statement at the end of 80 years of walking with the Lord, this is an astonishing statement. Moses saw the burning bush that was not consumed; witnessed the miracles of the Lord in Egypt and saw the Lord bring Israel out of Egypt with a mighty hand; saw the Lord part the Red Sea; he and Israel walked through the Red Sea on dry ground; saw the Lord miraculously provide water, manna, and food in the wilderness for 40 years and sustained their clothes and shoes; and witnessed the Lord conquer many enemies for Israel that should have easily defeated them. Yet after walking with the Lord for 80 years through many trials and tribulations on an epic scale, and speaking as it were, with the Lord face to face, Moses said that the Lord was just beginning to show His greatness and His mighty hand to him!

What did Moses mean by this statement? Was he saying that the abundance of miracles he was privy to wasn’t enough and that he needed to see more? Not at all. His statement was more about the inexhaustibleness of God’s greatness and might. The Lord is infinite in all that He is and all that He does; there’s no limit to His greatness and might! All that Moses saw and the intense life changing intimacy and fellowship he enjoyed with the Lord for 80 years was a drop in the ocean against the backdrop of eternity with Him and he knew it. I believe that’s what Moses was expressing.

Today, you and I do not experience the Lord’s greatness and might through the kinds or scale of miracles that Moses enjoyed. However, I would venture to say that we have and are experiencing the Lord’s greatness and might in a greater capacity than Moses. We have the same power that raised Jesus from the dead coursing through our mortal bodies. Resurrection power resides in our earthly tents (Romans 8:10, 11)! We who were once orphans and afar off, have been made to draw nigh, adopted and given the right of sonship through Jesus Christ (Galatians 4:1~5; Ephesians 2:13~22; John 1:12, 13; 1 John 3:1~3). We who were impoverished beggars are joint heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). We who were displaced are now seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6). These manifold blessings and many more are astonishing displays of God’s greatness and might in Christ Jesus! We must confess, along with Moses, no matter how many years we’ve been walking with the Lord, we’ve only just begun to discover the depth, the sweetness, the richness, and the joy of walking with and abiding in Him. Not to mention we’re just beginning to see and understand the unfathomable, inexhaustibleness of the spiritual blessings the Lord has lavished on us at Christ’s expense (Ephesians 1:3~23). I think the hymn writer of Amazing Grace expressed it perfectly when he wrote: “When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise That when we’d first begun.”

The book of Revelation says on two occasions that in heaven they sang a new song
(Revelations 5:9, 14:3). I believe this will forever be the mode of our existence in eternity with Christ. We will forever discover new aspects and new depths of the staggering array
and display of His character and nature that new praises of adoration and worship
will forever be on our lips. Hallelujah! He’s infinite and inexhaustible in all that He
is! Some of us have been walking with the Lord for some time now, some for 20, 30,
or 40 years. Some seasoned saints for even longer. However, we’ve only just begun to
see and experience what our hearts and minds can never fully comprehend (1 Corinthians
2:9). Let the church say, along with the Shulamite bride, He is altogether lovely (Song of Solomon 5:16)!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we thank You for revealing Yourself in Your Word, in our
understanding, and in our experience with You. We rejoice that for all eternity, our
intimacy with You, and our understanding of You will forever expand and forever
grow deeper than we can ever hope to comprehend! Lord Jesus, we thank You for
choosing to reveal Yourself and the Father to us (Matthew 11:27)! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
