Christ Surpasses
SCRIPTURE: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” Colossians 1:15

I believe we send the world into a conundrum when we speak of the whole life and purpose of Jesus, the Christ. In general conversations, everything is fine when we refer to baby Jesus and the Christmas; but when we speak of Jesus, the God-man, First Born, conversations/relationships get sticky, turbulent, even. God in Christ via a virgin birth enters the world as the sin sacrifice for man to have the greatest option (ever); yes, to have relationship and an eternal life with the Holy Godhead of the Universe. This may be a lot to swallow and even to accept, but it is true! Christ is our All!
In Colossians 1:15 (stated above), Christ is referred to as the ‘firstborn over all creation’. When I first read this verse, I was bewildered, to say the least. How could Christ be the firstborn when we know in Genesis, Adam was the first created being? Also, we know and understand Christ is not only the Son of God, but He stated in John 10:30, that He and the Father are one. So how are we to interpret Christ being the firstborn over creation?
Christ’s ‘firstborn(ism)’ is much different from how we refer to our mere firstborn. Yes, Christ is the Creator of the Universe! In all of His Glory, Holiness, Power, Love, Wisdom, Justice, He is the PREEMINENT One! In John 1, Christ is referred to as the Beginning and the Word; and He is the maker of all things, for He is Life and the Light of men. Therefore, we must grasp: Christ is not a created being; He is God! He is the First and the Last...Amen! He surpasses all we can comprehend Him to be.
Matthew 28:18, reads, “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.’” All of Christ’s character references let us know that He is with and for us. His very presence gives us everything we need, including peace, joy. His preeminence is a banner over our very existence; we, in Christ, enjoy salvation, love, gifts/ talents, protection, and triumphant victory!! Hallelujah!
PRAYER: Lord, may our minds be overtaken with Your surpassing Greatness, that we would see You high and lifted-up in all of Your Marvelous Glory. Oh, that we would cling to You with the confidence and trust Your existence gives, to even, expect (from You) the growth You give in our earthly and arduous trials. For You are forever Great and Greatly to be Praised! In Jesus’ name, amen.
