Pray For the Courage of Our Leaders
45 Days of Praying for the Elections – Day 45
SCRIPTURE: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
We need to understand that courageous leaders are vital to the success of the groups of
people they lead. The success of our country ultimately depends on our leaders in
government and in our courts of law making right, godly decisions. To do this our leaders
need to be closely attached to God and His Word. The closer our leaders are to God, the
more their actions and decisions will be driven by God’s influence rather than their feelings
or the sway of our culture.
So what is courage? Courage is the mindset that gives you the ability to stand and
persevere in the midst of danger, fear, and difficulty. Courage gives you the mental and
moral strength not be deterred by danger or pain. It makes you brave, resolute, and
tenacious.
This courage we’re talking about can only come from the Lord. God, here in Joshua
chapter one, is telling Joshua to tell the people what they are to do to have success and
prosper in the new land that He was giving them. They were to be obedient and observe
the Law which God gave them and not to turn from the left or right and meditate on it
day and night. (verse 1:7-8) To obey and stand on God’s Law they needed something,
courage. God said to them three times, “be strong and of good courage.” (v. 6, 7, 9). If our
leaders are to make and uphold laws that are in line with God’s standards, they too need
this courage from Him. We must remember that when Paul was encouraging young
Timothy in leading the church he said this in II Timothy 1:7. “God has not given us the
spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Proverbs 29:18 says for a
lack of vision the people perish (become ungovernable, or has cast off restraint). The
vision referred to here is God’s vision. The vision is the revelation and guidance from
God’s perspective. So, pray for our Christian leaders in government, the courts, law, and
schools across our nation to stand on God’s Word with courage. Knowing that He is with
them wherever they go!
PRAYER: Lord, we thank You for Your Law that is given in the Bible. It helps us in the
governing of Your world. Help Christian leaders who are in place to stand on the laws and
morals that You’ve ordained, that they may not waver, despite the opposition from
ungodly groups and their agendas. Draw them close to You that they may feel Your
presence with them always. May this give them the courage to stand no matter what!
Amen.
