He will Give You a New Song

Scripture: Psalm 40:3 He has put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in God.

All of my love, my peace, and happiness I’m going to give to (insert any Black Greek lettered organization), is a song sung by many Black Greek lettered sororities and fraternities. It originates from the 1970 soul/rock song, “Love, Peace, & Happiness” by the Chambers Brothers. If you have ever been to a step show, ever been to an HBCU (Historically Black College or University) Homecoming, ever attended an HBCU, or pledged one of its fraternities, sororities, or auxiliaries you probably have heard or sung this song. When sung, the singer means every word that they are singing. I mean they have endured much to wear those letters and recite those chants. As an Omega pearl and a proud graduate of an HBCU. I know those words all too well. I can close my eyes and hear the brothers singing, “all of my love, my peace, & happiness I’m going to give it to Omega while the ladies injected a timely and melodious, my love, my love”. The passion with what these words were sung made the hearer know that the singer truly loved the organization and was giving it their all. ALL of what; their love, peace, and happiness.
WOW, I never really considered what those words meant or how singing them portrayed me; a follower of Christ. At that time, in my young Christian walk I was pledging ALL of my love, my peace, and my happiness to something other than Jesus. The anvil had not hit me yet. As a result, this did not seem unusual. In fact, many believers at some time in their lives have pledged all of their love, peace, and happiness to something (drugs, job, money, cars) or someone (spouse, child, friend) other than Christ. However, as one matures spiritually God will give him a new song, a new pledge. The Lord will reveal where the person is and where she should be. The Bible says, once we are saved, we are new creation (2Corinthians 5:17). As we grow spiritually our palate changes; worldly things do not taste the same, our walk and our talk changes; we look less and less like the world. God puts a new song in our heart and therefore a new song in our mouths. Has your song changed? Has your pledge changed? Have you considered what or whom you are giving ALL of your love, peace, and happiness too?

Prayer: Lord, thank you giving us a new song. Thank you for Your patience as we learned to sing it. Your Word says we are to have no other gods before You, yet we do. Thank you for the multiple opportunities to get it right. Where would we be without Your grace and mercy? Thank you for the ability to praise and worship You. Thank you for changing our desire so we now give all of our love, our peace, and happiness to You, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thank you for dying on the cross to save the world. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.

A new song, from the gift of a new heart, and an eternally refreshed hope makes all the sense in the world and then some. Thank You Lord!

Amen Sis Pat! I pledged Delta Sigma Theta back in the late 70's, but as my spiritual walk matured, I was convicted that I was participating in a form of idolatry, even though I believe in the Lord Jesus.

Thank You Lord for Your patience and forgiveness! Now I pledge my heart to You, and to love You with all of my heart, soul, mind and strength. Amen

Amen Sister. A new song I now sing, and throughout eternity. A change in my life surely leads me away from joining a Greek Sorority. The Holy Spirit will not lead you down the wrong path.
