The All Sufficiency of Christ
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 3:5 (NKJV) - Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God…
According to the lyrics of an old Sandi Patty/ Larnelle Harris duet, (“More Than Wonderful”), ‘He promised us that He would be a Counselor, a Mighty God, and the Prince of Peace. He promised us that He would be a Father, who would love us with a love that would not cease!” Those words extolling God’s matchless love and faithfulness to us, His elect people, remind me of His all-sufficiency. Simply put, Jesus IS enough! Now that’s a Christian catch-phrase that doesn’t get a whole lot of voice-play these days! Folks say, almost glibly, at times, ‘Have a blessed day!” “I’m blessed and highly favored!” “God is good all the time…,” and a host of other popular sayings, yet how much confidence and credence do we put in the fact that our Savior Jesus really is ALL-sufficient? When life circumstances are going relatively well, do we truly ponder and appreciate the all-sufficiency of Christ?
Whether people, saved or lost, recognize it or not, the Lord God is seriously into the principle of sufficiency, or as I’ve termed it, “enough-ness!” The actual word “sufficiency” may not be mentioned a whole lot in Scripture, yet His promise of providing sufficiently for us should never be undervalued, from matters of our daily food (Matt. 6:11), our need for sufficient monetary provision (Prov. 30:8), “…give me neither poverty nor riches…,” to our continued need of His all-sufficient grace for our ministering and performing routine daily tasks! (2 Cor. 12:9; 2 Cor. 3:5). While a recognition of God’s sufficiency is a mark of spiritual maturity, remember, our heavenly Father desires that we pursue spiritual ABUNDANCE in the areas of faith, speech, knowledge, diligence, and love (2 Cor. 8:7). Yes—we do well to seek abundance in these areas.
Prayer: Thank You, Abba, for re-focusing our hearts and minds on Your continual and gracious provisions for all of our needs. May we be in continual pursuit of a reservoir of gratefulness for Your All-sufficiency, lest we drift into an “entitlement mentality.” In Christ’s blessed name; Amen!
