Eateth Thou This? Drinketh Thou This?

SCRIPTURE: " Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.  58 This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.” John 6:54-58
This was an unbearable saying for most of the Jewish listeners, even dissuading some of Jesus' disciples and causing some of the closest to pause. Even now, some stumble with it and divide over it within the contemporary church. But, let scripture be 'light' unto scripture, and as challenging as it may be, it isn't a trivial matter to marginalize, for Jesus Himself offered it, with the impact statement of “... he that eateth of this bread shall live forever. (John 6:58)”

Let us consider that Spirit, the immaterial, holy, and eternal, precedes and determines all matter. "In the beginning God created (Genesis 1:1)” Consider as well "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...(John 1:1)"  Further, let us recall that it is written "Man does not live by bread alone but by every 'Word' which proceeds from the mouth of God...(Matthew 4:4)"

We can conclude that 'bread' is here, of two sorts, both of which are given by God, from heaven... material bread [example manna] for the needs of the natural man [a gift], and 'food for the soul', a 'bread' born of the Spirit for the needs of the spirit of the natural man [a gift].
Yes, "... the Word became flesh and dwelt among us...(John 1:14)" Jesus as the Word of God, and the Bread of Life, invites us all to “taste and see that the LORD is good: (Psalm 34:8)” This elusive language, though radical, is indeed figurative. This is made clear by "For the bread of God is 'He' which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world...I am the bread of life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst. (John 6:33,35)”

"It is the spirit that quickeneth; 'the flesh' profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. (John 6:63)” To 'come' to Christ, and to heartily 'believe' in Him, is to 'eat, and drink' to eternal satisfaction. Amen. Eat thou this. Drink thou this. Be very persuaded, to life.  "... I am the first and the last: I am He that liveth and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. (Revelation 1:17,18)”

PRAYER: May we all continue coming to and believing in Him who is the author and finisher of our faith. Help us, Holy Spirit, to be increasingly authentic in our pursuit and steadfast upon our gain of grace and gift of love through Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.
