Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret

SCRIPTURE: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
People of a certain age are probably familiar with the very popular novel by Judy Blume, Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret. This coming-of-age novel explored a young girl’s quest for religion in a family without any religious affiliations. As Margaret set out on this journey she is also growing up and dealing with the issues of a pre-teen girl. During this journey she asks, “Are You there God? It’s Me, Margaret.” Not only did Margaret wonder if God was there she wasn’t sure He even knew her.

Have you ever wondered if God was there? Have you ever asked, “Are You there God?” Have you ever wondered if God has left you? Have you asked, “Lord, why has thou forsaken me?”  just to hear His response, “I will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrew 13:5).”  We all have. We all have been dealing with something, and our faith began to waiver and we start to think God has forsaken us. We have all been in a dark place and have cried out to God seemingly to no avail. You may have even asked, “Are you there God? It’s Me.” There will be times in life where it will seem like God has forsaken you. There will be times in life where you will feel that God is not listening to you or that God is not with you. It is at those times that you must lean on what God has said. God said, “I am with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9).” God said, that He is your refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46: 1-3). We must be reminded that God can not lie, His Word is His bond and just like his Word says in time of trouble, He will be there.

PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, forgive our doubt. Father, forgive our misgivings and our turning away from You. Dear Lord, bring to our remembrance Your Word which we have hidden in hearts so we can pull it out in times of need. Lord, thank You for understanding that we may doubt You and for loving us in spite of it. Lord, thank You for providing and protecting us anyway. Thank You, for being our umbrella during the storm and for always being with us. But more than anything, Lord, thank You for Your Son, Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
