Love Worth Emulating

SCRIPTURE: “God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them…” 1 John 4:16b
This year National Grandparents Day falls on Sunday, September 7th. As it approaches, I can’t help but share my conviction that everyone should have the experience of a godly grandparent. [For me it was my maternal grandmother]. She knew how to show forth the love of Christ. In fact, I don’t recall her ever speaking an unkind word about anyone. You may doubt that, but you didn’t grow up in her frequent company as I did, with many occasions to simply observe her ways, amidst all kinds of people. If someone’s manner or unpleasant habits bothered or offended her, she may have shared with you--upon your inquiry, and with no rancor or malice in her voice-- that she didn’t care for “so-
and-so’s” ways. Nearly four decades later, I still miss her gracious peace-loving spirit.

If ever there was a matriarch in my family of whom I could always say, ‘She loved me
unconditionally,’ it was my Grandma. Even on those occasions—and there are few—when she had to pull me up on some character flaw or unflattering disposition I’d displayed in my youth, she did it in such a way that you knew she really had your edification and growth in mind; she reprimanded you with such an obvious love that you felt badly about having disappointed her! Would that we felt just as grieved, if not moreso about our actions, attitudes, or thoughts that grieve the Spirit of our blessed Lord and Redeemer!

PRAYER: Dear Abba, please remind Your kingdom people that as parents, grandparents, or primary caregivers of young developing hearts, our speech and responses to challenges make a lasting impact, for good or for bad. Thank You in Christ’s blessed name; amen!
