Great is Your Faithfulness

SCRIPTURE: “This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. 22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23
The prophet Jeremiah had warned the Israelites that God’s judgment was coming upon the nation because of their disobedience, but they did not believe it. Now, while viewing the horrible results of his prediction, Jeremiah penned the book of Lamentations. Why? The weeping prophet wanted to unveil his grieving process regarding the destruction of Jerusalem. The structure of this book is linked to the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

Jeremiah used an alphabetical, acrostic technique, so that the reader could memorize the passages more easily. By implementing this technique, the forlorn prophet illustrated that he had not shortened his grieving process. This heartbroken prophet deliberately and intentionally allocated time to reflect upon and even record his emotions. I contend that Jeremiah had learned to grieve from A to Z!

In the midst of Jeremiah’s grief, God’s comfort surfaced. Reflection upon God’s sovereignty and goodness gave the prophet hope for the future: “This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope. Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:21-23)

When experiencing a painful loss, remember to take adequate time to grieve and to reflect upon God’s goodness. Then we will be able to experience His comfort and hope for the future. (Our Daily Bread, November 14, 2011)

PRAYER: Thank You Lord for being touched with our infirmities, yet without sin. Thank You for Your comfort that meets us in that place that only You can touch. What LOVE!!!
